Midweek Motivation
In honor of Christmas, this week’s Wednesday questions will be themed recipes for the most wonderful time of the year!
Q. How do I avoid my family during the holidays when they’re being mean to me, and making jokes at my expense?
Families tend to be our worst critics, especially when they rally together during a big family holiday! It’s easy to get caught up in that negativity and take it to heart. The best way is to extricate yourself from the situation. If that means going to your room, or excusing yourself from the festivities entirely, do whatever is best for YOUR mental health! For too many years, we’ve been conditioned to believe that it's “all in good fun” and we should take the gentle abuse, but that is never okay and should not be tolerated. There is such a thing as lighthearted fun, but the second it borders on unhealthy, don’t worry about disengaging and protecting your mental health and wellbeing!
Q. Is it too soon to get a christmas gift for someone i’ve been seeing for 3 months-ish?
The art of gift giving, and the timing, is incredibly important. You don’t want to go too hard too soon, because then they might feel overwhelmed and unprepared, but you also don’t want it to seem like you don't care. Personally, I like something more fun and quirky in the new stages of a relationship; a gag gift of sorts. That could be anything from a funny book, that means something to you, to an excursion, or anything else that resonates with you and your personality!
Q. I feel incredibly alone during this time of year, when everything seems to be catered for couples. How can I let go and try to enjoy it without a partner, and not feel so alone?
Feeling like you need to be a part of a couple during the holidays is nothing new- there are literal movies about this exact premise (Holidate, anyone?)! The holidays are designed to make you feel like you need to find your one true love with whom you can enjoy and explore with, and ring in the new year, but that’s not the only way to find happiness during such a festive time! You can appreciate and enjoy time with your friends. Or your family members who you may not have seen in a while. And even time with yourself, after a tumultuous and long year. Learn to love and find happiness in being in your own presence, and being the happiest version of yourself. Whenever you're ready, it’ll happen- oftentimes, when you least expect it! Focusing on that one glaring hole in your life won't change it, but only make it seem more gaping and wounded. Focus on all the great things you have to look forward to; the health you have to be grateful for. Recognizing the small miracles in your life can help bring upon bigger ones!
“One Drink” Wednesday: Spiced Cranberry Thyme Moscow Mule
Make wrapping presents a bit more fun with this delish cocktail to elevate your holiday spirit!
Ingredients
SPICED CRANBERRY SYRUP
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup water
2 cups fresh cranberries
2 fresh thyme sprigs
1 inch fresh ginger, sliced
1 tablespoon cardamom pods
MOSCOW MULE
2 ounces (1/4 cup) vodka
juice from 1/2 of a lime
1/4 cup pomegranate or cranberry juice
1-2 ounces (2-4 tablespoons) spiced cranberry syrup
ginger beer, for topping
INSTRUCTIONS
1. To make the cranberry syrup. In a pot, bring 1/2 cup water, the honey, cranberries, ginger, and cardamom to a boil over high heat. Boil 5 minutes or until the cranberries begin to burst, then remove from the heat. Stir in the thyme. Let cool. Remove the ginger, cardamom, and thyme. I prefer to leave the cranberries in, but you can strain those out if desired.
3. Fill a cocktail glass with ice.
2. Combine the vodka, lime juice, pomegranate juice, and cranberry syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake until combined, about 1 minute. Strain into your prepared glass. Top with ginger beer. Enjoy!
