Another Sunday in the books, and another set of worries to plague your day/week/year.
Like any upstanding citizen, your weekend was probably marred with the ‘what not to do’s’ and the ‘i don’t know her’s,’ occupying both your clarity and well-being.
Was it imperative that you chase that last tequila shot with a champagne shower and inform your ex boyfriend of it?
Perhaps not, but to quote Julius Caesar in his time of triumph: “veni, vidi, vici.” A latin lesson and historical tidbit?
You’re welcome, last brain cell. You are welcome.
The number one principle we wanted to adhere to with this newsletter was to alleviate the angst that clouds Sundays like the fog over a particularly important day.
And whilst the news is doing everything within its power to make that mission near impossible, it’s important to tune out the madness, drown out the voices, and be still-if only for a moment.
The mission? Use this Sunday to center, ground, and focus.
Take a beat today and still your mind; rid it of every negative thought, every self-effacing remark, every fear-ridden dream. Be here and now, and be grateful for every miniscule thing in your life, from something as mild as the headache you don’t have but probably deserve, to the roof over your head, sheltering you and providing you the space you need to be your best self.
Ground yourself with breaths in and out, thinking of nothing but a babbling brook; a sun-filled beach, with sand warming your toes; of the bluest skies to give you peace. Images to tranquil your mind and your heart.
After all that, begin to focus and prepare yourself for the excitement of a new week! The challenges you’ll set for yourself to conquer all over again. The multitude of adventures on which you’ll embark, lighting up your week, and restructuring the narrative that the start of the week must be the hardest, too. And all the opportunities you’ll have to rewrite the story that is your life.
As always, remind yourself that this is your life and you’re in control, sitting firmly in the drivers seat, taking yourself on the journey of a lifetime.
Monday Mantra (Monday’s are a bitch, you don’t have to be)
Your Monday Mantra to start this week is:
“I am inspired by every day and every moment in which I feel whole-heartedly and incandescently alive. I am the strength I need, the love I seek, and the happiness I yearn for; I am completely whole.”
Book of the Week: The Secret History
The Secret History follows the lives of wealthy students at elite colleges exploring the darkest parts of human desire. Sex and murder.
Who said this newsletter was going to be all rainbows?
But in all seriousness, the book has been translated into 24 languages and sold over 5 million copies. Originally penned in 1992 by Donna Tartt (Pulitzer prize winner, Times most influential people), there’s never a bad time to dive into the mayhem of this cult classic.
The book is an inverted detective story (with crime being committed at the beginning), and then narrated from the perspective of one of six individuals. The events leading up to (and the lasting effects of) the murder are then highlighted in explicit detail over the subsequent 544 pages.
I won’t ruin it for you, but I highly recommend that you put this on your list.
If you’re still not convinced, the best way to describe this work, is with a single line, found in the book jacked of the novel, perfectly summarizing the work…. “the thinking person’s thriller.”
